In Memory of Rex: The Patchett Family’s Fight for Safer Streets

The Patchett family's journey into public advocacy was forged by a devastating personal tragedy that exposed a critical failure in Nevada's justice system.

On March 7, 2022, Jason and Samantha Patchett lost their beloved 13-year-old son, Rex, when a reckless driver speeding over 90 mph lost control of his sport-car and violently struck and killed Rex while he was riding his scooter on the sidewalk in front of his school.

The driver was handed the maximum sentence permitted under the law at the time. Despite the egregious facts of the case, the existing law was insufficient to deliver a sentence that truly fit the crime. The Patchett family recognized the profound need to do better for victims of vehicle violence and empower judges with greater discretion for stronger sentences in extremely reckless cases.

In a testament to their strength and commitment to change, the Patchett family joined with district legislators to champion Senate Bill 322, now known as Rex’s Law. The family tirelessly implored Nevadans to stand up to vehicle violence and support the bill.

This landmark legislation significantly increased the penalty for reckless driving resulting in substantial bodily harm or death. Governor Joe Lombardo held a ceremonial signing for Rex's Law. As Rex's father stated at the signing, this law will not only keep our roads safer but also bring justice to families in similar situations. The Patchett family's relentless work ensured that Rex’s legacy is one of real change and safer communities for all Nevada children and families.
